PRE-ORDER: E-BOOK Coldworking for kiln-formed glass artists

£24.00

This is a pre-order listing. The release date is yet to be confirmed, but will be pre-Christmas 2025.

This listing is for the E-BOOK version.

Coldworking refers to all of the work we do to change the shape or finish of our glass that can’t be achieved in the kiln. Broadly we’re talking about grinding and polishing, methods which allow us to refine our artworks after the kiln-work has been completed, but that also have their uses mid-process, where changes can be made to the glass before they go back into the kiln.

In this book, we will explore a variety of techniques that you can use, and look at case studies to help build a picture of what’s possible. You can look at coldworking as a set of skills that you can develop and build confidence in, giving you the freedom to reach the level of finesse you have in mind for your glass artworks. Expect detailed tutorials, photographs and diagrams along with troubleshooting advice for common mishaps.

There are lots of tools and methods that we can consider here, from using hand tools such as hand-pads and silicon carbide grits, through to working with machines like flat laps and lathes. Machinery can be difficult and expensive to source, so while we will look at and explore best use for those, we will also take an extensive look at hand-working tools, so that you can get the best results at the lowest cost.

You will also find contributions from four invited artists to provide inspiration, and demonstrate how artists take these cold-working skills and use them to achieve their aesthetic preferences. Expect insights from glass fusers, casters and jewellery makers, all using cold-working in different ways to achieve their desired results. These artists will be announced very soon!

A limited run print version is also available for pre-order here.
