What to expect on my In-Person Workshops at Garth Olwg: Information for the neurodivergent or nervous

Communication

-       You will receive an email when you book a workshop which includes all of the key information you will need. I will also send you a reminder email the day before the workshop, which includes a reminder of all of the key information about parking, location etc.

-       When you arrive, you will likely be greeted by my dad, Pete, in the reception and he will bring you through to the Art Room. If he isn’t there, you can walk through reception, turn left and follow the corridor to the Art Room which will be on the right.

-       I have a relaxed teaching style, but I am very organised. You can expect me to be friendly and enthusiastic. I will have all of my teaching examples ready, each student will have their tool kit and their own bench, and I will explain the full layout of the course at the start of the session.

-       You will receive thorough instructions for every part of the process and I am happy to repeat and demonstrate again where needed. You will have time to practise and its okay to get things wrong. I ask that all students are open to receiving help, as if you are not, it can present safety issues and stress.

-       You do not need to let me know about your neurodivergence, but if it makes you more comfortable to tell me, you’re more than welcome to. If you’re curious, I myself have ADHD.

 - There will be sections of the course where I ask the group to pause and gather round for me to deliver a section of information. It is anticipated that students are not talking during these parts of the course. I will ask if anyone has any questions at the end of each section like this, and this is a cue if you have anything to ask. I absolutely encourage everyone to be as chatty as they like throughout the course - it’s just these sections where everyone needs to process information that it’s useful for me to be the only voice.

Sensory

-       Working with glass can be a messy process. Your tools will not be brand new and are likely to be marked from previous use. You can expect to get your hands dirty.

-       There will be various smells in the second half of the course from the soldering and cementing processes.

-       The cementing process (stained glass) is messy and you will need to touch a sludgy material – you will have gloves to do this.

-       During the leading process (approx. 1:15pm-2:30pm) there will be a moderate noise of hammering nails (stained glass).

If you have any questions or suggestions of information to add here please let me know. :)
