What to expect on my Online Courses: Information for the neurodivergent or nervous

Communication

-       Online courses take place on Zoom, and you will receive a Zoom link for this two days before your course. You will also receive an email with the course notes (if applicable) one week before your course.

-       I have a relaxed teaching style, but I am very organised. You can expect me to be friendly and enthusiastic. I will have all of my teaching examples ready and I will explain the full layout of the course at the start of the session.

-       My online courses always start on time, but don’t worry if you are late, you will still be let into the session.

-       At the start of six-month course, I will offer everyone the opportunity to introduce themselves. This is to allow me a better understanding of your starting point and to help the group get to know each other. Things you could tell me could include information about your glass experience, what kiln you have access to, where you live and if there’s anything in particular you’re looking to get from the course. This is all optional, and if you would prefer not to do this please let me know beforehand, I will not put you on the spot and you can send me this information beforehand.

-       At the start of a short course I will ask a series of questions for which you can raise a hand to answer rather than full introductions. This will include questions about what glass you use, what kilns you use, and your experience level.

-       You will have the opportunity to ask questions throughout the session. I will frequently ask if anyone has a question, and this is the cue to ask. If you are worried about forgetting a question, you can write it in the Zoom chat at any time and I will check this regularly.

-       You do not need to let me know about your neurodivergence, but if it makes you more comfortable to tell me, you’re more than welcome to. If you’re curious, I myself have ADHD.

-       If you have any questions you need to ask to make yourself more comfortable before you book, you can email them to me at catherine@catherinedunstanglass.co.uk

Sensory

-       You will have complete control of which device to use for the session, and I recommend the largest screen possible to see any demos. You can also control the volume on your device.

-       My online courses are a bit like ‘information dumps’ in the sense that I give you lots of information, and then you go and practice the techniques in your own time afterwards. If you are struggling to concentrate, feel overwhelmed or need a break you are welcome to come in and out of the session as needed. You do not need to notify me of this, just do what you need to do. Anything you miss will be on the recording.

Miscellaneous

-       All online courses are recorded and are available to view back for two months after the live session. You can view this back as many times as you need to within this timeframe.

-       I encourage students to have cameras on but there is no requirement to do this. You are welcome to leave yours off and I won’t question you on it (unless I think it’s a tech issue rather than a preference).

If you have any questions or suggestions for information I should add to this list, please let me know. :)
